This is the second strategy that is approved by Iraq following the first strategy 2010-2014, but this one has its importance to Kurdistan region of Iraq due to poverty rate increase from 3.5% in 2012 to 12.5% in 2014. Given continuous economic and financial crises in Kurdistan region of Iraq in addition to one million IDPs, it is expected that this figure has been increased.
Like the first strategy, this strategy also has been prepared in cooperation with World Bank with participation of UNDP at a later stage of the preparation. Kurdistan region participated through KRSO, representative from ministries of education, labor and social affairs and Health. The second strategy adopted 6 outcomes to achieve the goal to reduce poverty in Iraq from 22.5% (current number) to 17% in 2022. The outcomes are as following:
1. Higher and sustainable income for poor.
2. Providing the poor with better healthcare.
3. better access of the poor to educational system
4. Providing the poor with healthiest dwelling environment.
5. Access of poor to social safety network.
6. Providing assistance to the poor at the time of sudden disaster and crises.
Implementing this project needs continuous supports from Iraq government through annual investment budget and social fund for development that recently has been approved by Iraqi council of ministers to be funded by donor countries and organizations in order to implement the poverty reduction strategy in Iraq and the three selected governorates including Duhok at the initial stage.
